PFU announces the HHKB Professional Elite, limited to 300 units
An aluminum HHKB marks the brand’s 30th anniversary. Japan’s advance-order lottery is open through October 28.
Announcement date: October 22, 2026

PFU has unveiled the HHKB Professional Elite, a made-to-order model celebrating HHKB’s 30th anniversary. It costs ¥330,000 including Japanese tax — approximately US$2,100 — with production limited to 300 units: 250 for Japan and 50 for China.
The dollar figure converts the Japanese price at ¥157.23 per US dollar, the midpoint of the Bank of Japan’s 17:00 JST quotes on October 22, 2026. It is a currency conversion, not an announced US retail price.
What makes the Elite special?
The Elite brings HHKB’s familiar compact layout into a purpose-built metal enclosure. It follows the premium aluminum HG models released for the brand’s 10th anniversary in 2006, with updated electronics, silencing, and industrial design.
- A case machined from a single block of aluminum, then blasted and anodized, rather than the usual plastic housing.
- Type-S silenced electrostatic capacitive switches, paired with a newly designed metal-frame top mount.
- A design developed with TENT, with the HHKB logo and individual limited-edition number laser-engraved underneath.
- Four tilt settings using interchangeable leg parts, a wired USB-C connection, and software keymap customization. The 60-key English layout comes in printed or blank versions in charcoal, white, and Snow.
A new internal metal frame and top mount
The redesign goes beyond the aluminum outer case. As Satoshi Nakayama reports in Yahoo! News Expert, a metal frame sits above the circuit board and is fastened to the upper case with screws, forming a top-mount structure. Together with the rigid machined enclosure, this arrangement is designed to limit flex and provide firm, clearly defined feedback when typing.
Mac Fan’s launch-event report identifies the internal plate as SPCC cold-rolled steel and confirms that it is fixed to the top frame. The result is a change to how the keyboard supports its switches, alongside the move to Type-S silencing — a central part of what distinguishes the Elite from simply putting an existing HHKB inside an aluminum case.
Elite vs. Professional HG and HG JAPAN
The original HG offered an aluminum-bodied Professional 2; HG JAPAN added hand-finished Wajima urushi lacquer keycaps. Despite its name, HG JAPAN also used the 60-key English layout. Its distinctive red-and-gold finish made it a different kind of luxury object from today’s Elite.

Historical prices include the tax applicable in 2006; Elite’s price includes current Japanese tax. HG and HG JAPAN are discontinued. The Elite is a successor in spirit, with a different feature mix, rather than a reproduction of the lacquer model.
Our take: ¥330,000 in a 20-year context
It is a substantial price, but the increase from the original HG is relatively restrained across two decades. Elite costs about 26% more than HG’s ¥262,500 tax-inclusive launch price; before tax, the increase is 20%, from ¥250,000 to ¥300,000. It also sits well below HG JAPAN’s original ¥525,000 price.
Japan’s annual all-items consumer price index rose from 95.5 in 2006 to 111.9 in 2025, on a 2020=100 basis — roughly 17%. Using 2025, the latest complete calendar year, HG’s ¥262,500 works out to approximately ¥308,000 in 2025 yen. Elite’s ¥330,000 is about 7% above that benchmark. This broad household-price comparison does not measure keyboard manufacturing costs, but it supports the view that PFU has made an effort to contain the anniversary model’s price.
Collector appeal and the secondary market
Our view: a numbered run of just 300 keyboards, with official sales allocated only to Japan and China, gives the Elite clear collector appeal. Limited access outside those markets could also contribute to a resale premium. That is an editorial outlook, not evidence of an established resale price: the Elite has not shipped yet, and future prices will depend on actual demand and availability.
Japan sales schedule
Orders close when the allocation sells out or on June 30, 2027, whichever comes first. China has a separate sales channel. See PFU’s announcement for regional terms and application details.
